IMS Global Learning Consortium Announces Support for Digital Promise Legislation

IMS Encourages the Community of U.S. Educational and Learning Technology Leaders to Take Action to Move Cornerstone Legislation Forward

Lake Mary, FL. - October 3, 2006 The IMS Global Learning Consortium announced today its support for the U.S. Digital Promise legislation that proposes establishment of a fund to support research into education and learning. The IMS Board of Directors recently unanimously approved a resolution indicating support for the initiative.

"Both the United States and the world will benefit from much needed investment in educational and learning technology research," comments Rob Abel, Chief Executive Officer of IMS. "While today's focus on accountability in education is a positive step, the reality is that there must be incentives to create new innovations that will create breakthroughs in the ability to educate more people, more effectively, for greater independence and self-actualization than our current educational experiences. While testing may indicate where our educational systems have problems, it cannot solve those problems."

The Digital Promise proposal has tremendous synergy with the IMS Learning Impact Awards and Recognition program. In this new program, IMS evaluates nominated educational and learning approaches to recognize the impact and potential impact on global education challenges. The winners will be announced at IMS's annual Learning Impact conference to be held April 16-19, 2007, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
